Tail of the Dragon Weekend

Friday, Nov 1, 2019 @ 8:00 am – Sunday, Nov 3, 2019 @ 8:00 am
The Gap
318 Turns in 11 Miles

The “event” hotel is the Quality Inn & Suites in Robbinsville, NC. The rooms are small and it is kind of pricey for what you get, but it is luxurious compared some of the other options in town. $95+tax for the no-refundable rate, $105 if want the possibility to cancel by Thursday 10/31. You are responsible for making your own reservations.

The following is a rough draft of an itinerary for the weekend. The only dates and times that are locked in are our Friday morning’s departure from the Sprint/Greg’s Gas+.

Deals Gap Weekend Schedule

8:00 AM Depart Sprint/Greg’s Gas+ on Martintown Rd just north of I-20 Exit 1
12:00 PM Lunch in Highlands, NC
1:00 PM Depart Highlands
3:00 PM Arrive Robbinsville
5:00 PM Optional Gap Drive for those who haven’t had enough fun yet
6:30 PM Dinner at The Hub in Robbinsville

7:00 AM Optional Gap Drive to beat the traffic
9:00 AM Start Day Drive Loop
12:00 PM Lunch at Tellico Grains Bakery in Tellico Plains, TN
3:00 PM Return from Day Drive Loop
6:00 PM Dinner (maybe The Mountainview Restaurant in Fontanna Village)
7:30 PM Optional drive to Cherhola Skyway for Milky Way viewing

The assembled scatter to the winds…

It is the same as it has always been, only with a couple differences:
The usual lunch restaurant, The Sports Page, is no longer in business, but there are several other spots to choose from:
The Ugly Dog Public House which is just before getting into town. It is a classic tavern serving pub food. menu
Wild Thyme located in the same shopping area as Kilwins (fudge/ice cream) and serves Asian-influenced American cuisine. menu
Bistro on Main is just past where Sports Page was at the Main Street Inn that serves American cuisine. menu

For Saturday’s drive there is the traditional Joe Brown Hwy Loop. Or optionally, a drive that includes an out and partial back on the newly extended Foot Hills Parkway. Plus lots of smooth twisty country Tennessee roads through small farms. It still finishes at the Tellico Grains Bakery for lunch. Because this drive starts out travelling through the Gap, the early drive can be omitted. Or the die hard curve connoisseur can do both. I’m calling this the Foothills Parkway Loop

Oh, yeah, Brian and Donna will be in Oregon, but wishing they were there with you.

Shirley and I are tentatively scheduling to go. We have to work out some details someone to keep pet. We would probably drive over to Augusta from Statesboro on Thursday even.
Will follow up with a positive in a few weeks

Just made room reservation for Friday and out on Sunday. By the way, there are plenty of rooms available. Looking for nice weather and plenty of color.

Bill and I won’t be able to make it. Maybe we can go next year. Have fun and be safe.

Just a quick check to see who else will be going on the Deal’s Gap trip besides Ed & Shirley, Glenn & Deb, and Trudy & Hal? Please let me know if you plan on attending by phone, email, or commenting on this post. hhscott@outlook.com – 706-825-1332. Thanks. Hal

Annie and I are planning on pursuing some curves up there. Reservations made!

    I’ll be participating, but….
….driving the Corvette, because I have to hightail it from Robbinsville to DC on Sunday morning so I can visit with our daughter and husband who will be visiting from Thailand on Monday and Tuesday the next week. It’s an 8+ hour, mostly interstate (I-26 & I-81), drive that I’d prefer not to make in a Miata.

As of today, it looks like a pretty good turn-out for the Tail Trip. Also, it looks like there are still rooms available at the Inn. The more the merrier.
