Meeting Minutes for 6 November

When: November 6th 2014

Where: Villa Europa in Augusta – We met at the restaurant, ordered our food and then had a quick meeting.

Who: David Adcock, Kurt Breitinger, John Clark, Mike and Shirley Dyer, David and Devona Eastman, Larry and Rita Garner, Dennis and Karol Mason, Hal and Trudy Scott, Tom Varallo and a new couple Christopher and Donna Hoops.

Treasurer’s Report: John Nicholls (treasurer) not present, no report; Balance carried over: $1281.47.

Old Business:
• Thanks to Tom Varallo for coordinating the breakfast at Red Oak Manor and the tour of the Oliver Hardy Museum and Fine Mess Old Car Museum!
• New members please see Dennis Mason for name tags.
• Larry Garner has more cards to handout to prospective members.
• Looks like it was a good call on not doing the Leaf Peep since the weather was so bad – turns out they got about 22” of snow!

New Business:
• Thanks to Larry & Rita for planning tonight’s dinner!
• New members Chris & Donna Hoops were present. They have an ’04 Mazda Speed and a ’96 Mazda that has a blown head gasket – they could use some help with repairs or recommendations.
• Ernie has sold his Miata and bought a BMW and is no longer a member. We’ll miss him.

Upcoming Events:
• 15 November – John and Jackie Nicholls have planned a Breakfast at Wrap Em Up Crepes and Café in North Augusta. Optional drive afterwards. More info on the website.
• Christmas Party – Date: First Friday (December 5th) at Casa Bella in Aiken.

We have nothing planned for January and are hoping someone who hasn’t coordinated before will plan something for us. We’re open to all kinds of ideas!

We’ll have a planning meeting for events in 2015 sometime in January – to be announced.

We’ll have a new officers selection meeting sometime in June.

October 2nd Meeting Minutes

When: October 2nd 2014

Where: JB Buffet in North Augusta – We met at the restaurant, picked our food from the buffet and then had a quick meeting.

Who: David Adcock, Kurt Breitinger, Orlando and Sandy Carlo, Mike and Shirley Dyer, Larry and Rita Garner, Linda and Mark Hoelper, Alan and Jill Johnson, Dennis and Karol Mason, Tom Varallo, and Evelyn and Richard Whitehurst.

Treasurer’s Report: John Nicholls (treasurer) not present but sent the report; Beginning Balance: $1,166.47 added $320.00 in dues and magnet sales, minus $205 in expenses leaves an ending balance of $1281.47.

Old Business:
• Thanks to John Haff and Brian Borgardus for coordinating the drive and day at Panic Motorsports! Great place for breakfast, fun drive with 10 Miata’s plus 2 support vehicles, great day!
• New members please see Dennis Mason for name tags.

New Business:
• Thanks to John and Jackie Nicholls for planning tonight’s dinner!
• Larry has looked in to ordering window clings, turns out they are pretty darn expensive now vs. when Brian ordered them. A decision may be made to order more magnets.
• A little more info on the new Miata has been released, it will have a 1.4 turbo engine, plus there was a little more released on the new motor. Mazda will release more info at future motor shows.
• We have 3 new members: Al Shure who has a Red ’91; Christopher and Donna Hoops who have a White ’96 and a Gray ’04; and Douglas and Bee Martins who have a ’91 and a ’97.  Al Shure and the Hoops were not in attendance but Douglas Martins was tonight.

• 18 October – Breakfast and Scavenger Hunt. Dave Winkler, if you’re still planning on this please contact Brian or Larry so we can confirm.
• 1 November – Leaf Peeping, 10-12 hour drive to see the fall colors. Meet at Cracker Barrel off Exit 194 at I-20 at 7:00 am or meet up a little later before we begin the drive. More info on that on the website.

July 2014 Meeting Minutes

When:  July 19th 2014

Where:  Drive and breakfast for the monthly meeting – Eight Miata’s met at Greg’s Gas Plus (SC exit 1) for a very nice drive through the winding roads of South Carolina to have breakfast at Runway Dog Café near the Aiken Airport (several folks met us there).  Runway Dog is a nice little Café/Frame shop/Home town gifts shop.  They were a little overwhelmed by the 21 of us but recovered nicely and served a delicious breakfast.  Question:  How many times did we cross I-20? And how many times did we go under versus over I-20?  Answers below.

  • Thanks to Brian and Donna Bogardus for planning today’s drive and breakfast!
  • New members Richard and Evelyn Whitehurst were introduced. They have a 2001 Miata.
  • Jackie Nicholls discussed the upcoming purchase of 7” Miata Magnets for the car, negotiations ongoing. The price will be between $17.50 and $18.00 for a pair.

Upcoming Events:

  • 7 August – Meeting at Bucca de Beppo. Room is reserved for 6:30. Bucca de Beppo is a family style restaurant where the entrée’s are meant to serve several. A small will feed 3 people. There are coupons available online. The restaurant is located at the Augusta Mall and it’s best to park by Macy’s.
  • 9 August – Will begin with a lunch at Gail and Miller Butler’s house and end with a Canal Cruise on the Augusta Canal scheduled for departure at 7:00pm for a sunset cruise. Meet at the River Walk Marina for the approximately 1½ hour cruise. $20.00 (cash only!) per person and bring your own beverages, yes, alcohol is allowed too. The club has decided we would like to have finger desserts as well, so bring a dessert that can be eaten with your hands to share.
  • 16 August – Bug splat. We will begin with dinner at Apizza di Napoli in Aiken at 6:00. That will be followed by a drive through the country to compete for biggest bug, most bugs etc. We will end at the Sonic in North Augusta to compare grills, and award the trophy.
  • 20 September – Panic Motor Sports day. More info soon.
  • 1 November – Leaf Peeping, 10-12 hour drive to see the fall colors. More info on that soon too.
  • Christmas Party – Date TBD, Shirley Dyer inadvertently but graciously volunteered. Thank you Shirley!

June Meeting Minutes

When: 5 June 2014
Where: Meeting held at Antonio’s in North Augusta – Excellent food! Thanks to John and Jackie for arranging it! Inside the restaurant was a bit noisy and we didn’t want to disturb the other diners so after dinner we held the meeting in the parking lot out back.
Who: Ernie Bloom, Donald & Kay Boltz, Kurt Breitinger, Gail & Miller Butler, John Daudelin, Mike & Shirley Dyer, Larry Garner, John & Carol Haff, Mark Hoelper, Dennis & Karol Mason, John & Jackie Nicholls, Stacey Timmerman, Tom Varallo, Rudy & Patty Wilmoth, Dave Winkler, Sue & Dave Woomer.

Treasurer’s Report: May 1 – May 31 Balance on hand $937.92. Many paid their dues of $10.
Reminder to everyone that this year’s club dues are due.

Old Business:

  • Larry gave thanks for the great turnout for day at the Miata dealership and John Daudelin for putting it together. Larry thanked Dennis Mason for putting name tags together. Larry also presented a frame of several pictures of 50’s & 60’s Ferrari’s to Kurt Breitinger for his help and use of his garage for Tech Day.
  • Dave Winkler presented “#1 Mechanic Award” as a thank you gift to Rudy Wilmoth for helping him replace his timing belt during Tech Day at Kurt Breitinger’s house. The award included replacement parts and new tubes of lubricants Rudy had on hand that were necessary for the repair.
  • John Haff reminded everyone he has travel bags to borrow if anyone is planning a long trip and needs a waterproof bag that goes on top of the trunk for extra packing space.
  • Dennis Mason has a crank-shaft tool for 1994 and newer 1.8 & 2.0 engine model Miata’s if anyone wants to borrow.

    2. Dennis Mason continues as VP
    3. Karol Mason elected as secretary with Rita Garner as Vice Secretary
    4. John Nicholls remains Treasurer

Calendar of Upcoming Events:

  • 21 June – Trenton Peach Parade. Everything is set; we just need cars and folks to start lining up at 9:30-9:40. Stacey is looking for a place for breakfast. Any ideas? Suggestions for Gary’s in Graniteville or Airport Diner. Stacey will make the decision, email to all and post to the website.
  • 3 July – The regular meeting will be postponed to the b’fast on the 19th, Brian and Donna will put together breakfast; look for the location posted soon.
  • 9 August – Jackie has proposed the Patriot Boat Tour on the Savannah River. Sunset cruise on Saturday night is $20 per person and tentatively scheduled for 7:00 pm. Dinner will be coordinated by Gail & Miller at their house.
  • 16 August –Bug Splat
  • 4 September – open for a member to plan
  • 20 Sept @ Panic Motor Sports in Columbia SC, John Haff will confirm date w/ Panic. 20 Sept will match up with breakfast date so we may do that together if the date works out with Panic.
  • 18 October – Dave Winkler is proposing breakfast and a Scavenger Hunt. He has a plan put together. Ready to execute.
