Canoeing the Black Waters of the Edisto

Date: Saturday, May 12, 2007
We were 7 at Aiken State Park after May Miatas for Breakfast to enjoy a leisurely and enchanting paddle along the recently improved canoe trail. We saw cypress trees and a dead water snake. We didn’t see much else because we were too busy watching for low-hanging tree branches, half-sunken logs and other crafty treachery designed to distract us from viewing nature.

The temperature was perfect, we were nearly always in shade along the swift and narrow river. It felt a lot like a Miata autocross course, only on water. First rule: look ahead! After a spell, we got into just drifting (as in Fast and Furious: Edisto Drift) by anticipating the hairpin turns and just letting the canoe drift sideways, then pouring on the “gas” to propel us out of the cross current.

In a few spots, the river widened for a truly contemplative experience. It was quiet, and the filtered sunlight reflected like diamonds on the glassy surface of the water.

We passed under the State Park Road bridge where some cyclists were taking a break. They were working much harder than we were, as they urged us to jump in to “cool off.” Before too long we arrived at the take-out dock. We had finished the entire trip in just under 80 minutes. No sweat, no swimming, just fun.

On the way back along US78 toward Aiken, we passed the same cyclists, still working too hard.

May Meeting

Mostly Miatas Under The Awning The President Tries To Hold A Meeting No One Wants To Be Nominated Sno-Cap Drive-In
Smome of the many Miatas that took up residence under the Sno-Cap’s awning.
The President tries to hold a business meeting while some people eat and others chat among themselves.
When nominations were asked for for next year’s Club officers, everyone looked at their feet.
As night approached we all got in our little zoom-zoom cars and went home.

[soapbox on]
We had a nice turn out for the meeting, most of the really active members were there, but when a call went out for people to lead the Club next year, all that was heard was the sound of traffic on West Ave. Everyone wants to be in the Club, but nobody wants to be in charge. Maybe it is time to go rouge – No Officers. We pick a place and time to hold the monthly meeting that is always the same, where we can gather and hash out what events we want to hold. Get any event info to me and I’ll put it on the website. While we are morphing, how about – No Dues? There is no paper newsletter anymore, so what are our expenses? We can just do anything needed ala carte. Take that big ol’ bank account and donate it to POS Racing a worthy charity.
