10 Years Ago – June 2006

Peach Festival Parade

Date: Saturday, June 17th
Time: 9:00 AM
Attending: Brian & Donna Bogardus, John & Jackie Nicholls, Denny Smith, Stacey & Cindy Timmerman, Lester & Janeth Welsh, Rudy Wilmoth & Patti Letizia and Dave Winkler.

We all met up at Billy’s Super Store and did the usual pre-event thing – chewed the fat. After everyone had a chance to buy some refreshments and/or use the facilities, Stacey rounded us up like a border collie does wayward sheep and led us over to the parade line-up area.

We were assigned spot #34 and the parade marshal had told Stacey that she had set aside enough room for 10 cars, so our seven should have had no problem fitting. Unfortunately she must have thought we were Shriners with go-carts or something because there wasn’t enough room between the pie plate markers to fit all of us. We stretched one car past the beginning marker and several past the ending one. There of course was a simple fix, being as there was no one lined up in front or behind us yet, we just moved the pie plates. 🙂

We then had about another hour to kill waiting on the actual parade to start, so we chewed some more fat and hoped that nothing loud would line up behind us and nothing equine would line up in front of us. It is primary/run off season in South Carolina, so the local politicians were thick as mosquitoes on a summer’s eve shaking hands and smiling.

When the parade finally did start it was kind of anti-climatic. It does seem like every year the crowds lining the route get bigger and bigger and the trick is to meter out your candy tossing so as to not run out before the end and not to end up with a lot of starlite mints and yellow lollipops.

Afterwards most everyone walked into the festival grounds and eye-balled the crafts or ate some nutritious fair food like an elephant ear or a corn dog before heading home.

This is the last of the 10 Years Ago posts, because the July 2006 newsletter was the last one I produced. Someone volunteered to take up the job, but never did. I had been doing a web site along side of the newsletter for almost a decade at that point and by then nearly everyone in the club had internet access. Five years after it happened, we moved into the 21st century.

Barn Find Hunter

Tom Cotter literally wrote the book(s) on barn finds. In our new series, Tom travels the country in his 1939 Ford Woodie Wagon, searching for forgotten classics in barns, backyards and scrapyards. This time, Tom’s in Savannah, Ga., where he finds a British classic that’s made its way to the U.S. from Australia and a muscle car lover’s dream.

June 2nd Meeting Minutes

Where: Big Daddy’s Bar and Grill, Martinez

Who: Mike and Shirley Dyer, Larry Garner, Thomas and Jennie Hodges and their Grandson Caleb, Dennis and Karol Mason, Hal and Trudy Scott, Stacey Timmerman, Tom Varallo, Ralf Wilms, new member Victor Yu, and potential new member Dick Larson.

We all ordered our food then Tom called the meeting to order while we waited for our food to be cooked and delivered. Decent turnout, considering it was on the Augusta side of town. 🙂 Dinner and service were both very good. Thanks to Dennis and Karol for planning this dinner.

Treasurer’s Report: Started at $1606.63. After dues payments of $20.00 and no expenditures, the balance comes to $1626.63.

  • Tom has put together some business cards with our website, to give to people who own Miatas that may be interested in joining. He handed them out and as we were leaving Larry and Dennis spotted a new soft-top Miata in the parking lot and tucked one on the driver’s side window.
  • See Dennis for name-tags
  • New club merchandise is available: Pins are $3 each; “Support Vehicle” car magnets $25 per pair, canvas tote/shopping bag $20 each. Coffee mugs available fromhttp://www.cafepress.com/+masters-miata+mugs The 3” window stickers have come in and are available now. Communigraphics in North Augusta has our logo, for $8 you can have it embroidered on just about anything.
  • 2016 Christmas Party set for Dec 9th at Woodside Plantation Clubhouse. Thanks to Shirley Dyer and John and Kathy Omerod for setting this up. Tom is still considering and we will discuss it at an upcoming meeting, for the club to chip in for part of the cost.
  • Reminder that dues for calendar year 2016 become delinquent on June 30th – This will bring you to paid up through December. Thank you for your support!

New Business/Upcoming calendar events:

  • Please welcome new member Victor Yu. Tom met him at the Ridgecrest Coffee Bar and invited him to join, so he did! And he showed up for this meeting.
  • We also had a potential member, Dick Larson, show up as well. Hope you join us!
  • “Parade Laps” at Carolina Motorsports Park, were a lot of fun – so say Hal and Trudy Scott, and Tom. Jennie Hodges said “those weren’t parade laps” and it was a little intimidating, so she won’t be doing that again soon.
  • Planning to do Parade Laps at Road Atlanta 3-4 December, and maybe at Robling Roads Jan-Feb.
  • Election of Officers – When the dues structure changed in July, we never changed the “articles of incorporation”, so we need to decide if we want to elect new officers in July or wait until December. Tom will poll the club to solicit anyone who wants to volunteer for office. The current officers are willing to stay on for the time being.
  • Tom has two extra rooms reserved in Tennessee for “Zoomin in the Mountains” if anyone wants to attend but you must notify him immediately otherwise he needs to let them go by Monday June 6th or he’ll have to pay for them. So talk to him now!

The following events have been planned or are anticipated:

9-12 June Zoomin in the Mountains of TN
18 June Breakfast at Airport Grill and Drive to Trenton Peach Parade

Wacko Web Site

Sorry for the hopefully minor issues here on the site. For some reason no one seems to able to log on or sometimes even view the site. Somehow I remain logged on and I’m going to try and fix whatever it is, if I can figure it out…

UPDATE 6/3: My best guess is that it was the plugin used to display videos on the site. I’m searching now for a replacement.

UPDATE 6/4: After trying a few video plugins and finding them lacking I decided to uninstall and reinstall the original plugin. It works fine now. I’m actually inclined to think there was nothing wrong with it in the first place, it was probably some sort of web server hiccup…
