Saturday March 15th was to be our annual Tech Day at the Breitingers’, where people needing a few extra hands, additional garage space, special tools, or just some sage advice could get it. A few jobs had already been scheduled, and it was expected that some additional tasks would be added come Saturday. However, things did not go as expected.

For one thing, the weather was not conducive to any top down fun. Since it was rainy day, the few people who normally show up just to hang out were probably scared off. The big task that morning was supposed to be a roll bar installation on Dave Winkler’s car. Due to a household emergency at the Winklers’, the roll bar install fell behind schedule. A few initial tasks were to be started at the Haff residence and then they would be finished at the Breitingers’. The car never made it to the Breitingers. Another task on the schedule was the installation of sway bars on the Timmermans’ Miata. Stacey called that morning to say that his car was still being held hostage at the Paint and Body shop, and wouldn’t be available for the sway bar install.

Things were looking pretty bleak at this point – two garages full of tools were sitting empty with no Miatas to welcome. Finally in the early afternoon, folks started trickling in. By the time it was all over, we had (1) changed the oil in the transmission and differential of Ricky’s car, (2) replaced the catalytic converter, removed the defective cruise control, and bumped the timing on Andrew’s car, (3) ate a few pizzas, (4) watched some footage of the Sebring 12 hour race, (5) and swapped technical advice with each other. The last few people trickled out the door at close to 6:00 p.m.

But wait … there’s more. Stacey Timmerman got his car back a few days after the scheduled Tech Day. Since he still needed to install his sway bars before the upcoming Talladega Track day, I offered to assist him with his own private Tech Day. He stopped by one evening, and we installed the sway bars and did a Tech Inspection for the Talladega event. It apparently was a worthwhile evening, because Stacey had the time of his life once he got to the track.
