May Breakfast Trip

Members Attending: Brian & Donna Bogardus, Larry & Rita Garner, John & Jackie Nicholls, Patti & Rudy Wilmoth and Dave & Bobbie Winkler.

Donna and I led 4 other Miatas to breakfast at Ms. Shelby’s in Millen, GA for the May Edition of the MMC Monthly Breakfast Runs. We formed a short line of cars along 4 lane US 25 for the 40 miles south of Augusta, where we ate in the huge, but nearly empty dining room. Rudy and Patti were the first to leave the restaurant and it wasn’t until ten miles down the road back to Augusta before she realized she had forgotten them. It was as the last of us had paid our bills and I was leaving a tip, that anyone else (me) noticed the left behind item.

The four cars remaining took the slightly longer, slightly more rural, slightly more scenic two lane roads back to Augusta. As we traveled north the train of cars slowly shortened as folks fell off the route to do other things or head home. Donna and I continued on into the heart of the Martinez shopping district to return Patti’s sunglasses to her before heading home.

  • TREASURER’S REPORT: $1,195.78

    1. Past Events:
      1. There was a small contingent for breakfast at the New Moon in Downtown Augusta on April 16th. We were a few minutes earlier than a “regular” who bemoaned out loud that someone was sitting at HIS table, but he settled across the room without any more whining.
      2. Right after breakfast two cars, only one of which was actually going to Tech Day, caravaned to the Breitinger’s Garage Mahal. Some other folks did show up later and a couple of cars left the event better than when they arrived.
      3. The sparse attendance at the TSD Rally, only first and second prizes were needed, convinced John & Jackie Nichols that they won’t be any more of these unless someone else organizes it. Too bad, as their Rallys were always the highlight of the Club’s driving calendar.
      4. For the May 1st Walter Mitty Classic there was a rumor that Kurt Breitinger went, but he wasn’t present to confirm or deny it.

    1. Upcoming Events:
      1. Breakfast – May 21st – Dave & Bobbie Winkler are the hosts and Dave thought we might go to his favorite place – the Sunrise Grill.
      2. Ridge Peach Parade – June 18th – The Club will once again drive in the Ridge Peach Festival in Trenton.
      3. June Meeting – June 2nd – Someone suggested the Sno Cap Drive In in North Augusta and we saw that this was good, so it shall be.
    2. Officer Nominations – There were 18 folks in attendance and when the outgoing President asked for nominations he was met with stoney silence. Three of the current officers have already expressed their intentions to not serve in any capacity next year, while the fourth halfheartedly agreed to fill some spot, but we are still short 3 candidates for office.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted:

Drive-In Movie

Date: Saturday, May 19, 2001
Time: 7:00 PM
Place: Big-Mo
Members Attending: Judy Arrowood, Nicholas Arrowood, Zachary Arrowood, Brian Bogardus, Donna Bogardus, Karen Breitinger, Kurt Breitinger, Jim Creer, Judy Creer, Bruce Douglas, Chris Kaufman, Ron Kaufman, Jack Norris, Karen Norris, Cindy Timmerman, Stacey Timmerman, Rudy Wilmoth, Anita Wylds and Henry Wylds.
Guests Attending: Almost as many.

Man did we have a big crowd to go along with the 9 Club Miatas. Judy was there in the VW Bug convertible with the kids, four Miatas from the Columbia area came over to check us out and Stacey invited half his neighborhood: a Miata, a Z3 and an actual Austin-Healy Bugeye Sprite, plus Bruce‘s sister, a friend and the friend’s kid in a Hyundai. Good thing the trip to the Big-Mo is 40 miles or the first car would have reached the drive-in about the same time as the last car left the Sonic.

We got to the drive-in about 40 minutes after they opened the gates and it was packed. There were only a few spots together on the back row, the rest of our caravan had to tuck into spots scattered through out the place. I’m sure the draw was the two movies on the bill, Shrek and Mummy II.

Of course just as we were settling in, the rain started. Not too hard and it stopped just as soon as we all got our boots off and tops up. The silver lining was that it cooled the temperature down by about 10-15 degrees. Nice night for a movie. Shrek was the good movie for the night. Of the half dozen flicks we’ve seen here, I think it was the best one.

Only a few stayed after the first movie. Good thing some of us left too, as there was a line of people waiting outside the drive-in to get in to see Mummy II.

Sorry we missed it (the TSD Rally)– our schedule changed with the Shuttle launch, and was scrubbed due to a mal-function. We were amazed at the crowd – people setting up chairs in the grassy median of the road and just about anywhere else there was an open spot. Parking spots along the road facing the launch-site were going for up to $30 and were four deep from the road to the water. After we found out the launch was scrubbed, we headed out along with everyone else – taking over an hour to get to I-95!

We are back – attached is a picture to show we did it – just over 1700 miles to and around the state of FL – had a great time. The Miata performed without a flaw – topless almost all the trip.

You’ll notice it’s sporting new pin-strips, style-bar and home-made windscreen. The windscreen worked very well, made it from the frame of an old chair and window screen – if anyone wants to make one, let me know and I’ll offer my suggestions.

Hope to be at the meeting Thursday night.
