Home of Ten Governors

Meeting Place: Just Fresh in Martinez, GA – map
Time: 8:45 AM

After breakfast we will zig zag our way to the town square in Edgefield, SC to check out the monuments and there may even be a farmer’s market. We have all traveled the SC Heritage Corridor and seen Discovery Routes signs. Part of the Heritage Corridor is the placing of Discovery Centers in select spots along the route. Edgefield is fortunate enough to have a Discovery Center that will provide a lot of information on the history not only of Edgefield but also the surrounding area.

Just a few blocks away is an Antebellum home, pre-Civil War that was the home of one or more of the Governors that hailed from Edgefield. It is maintained by the Daughters of the Confederacy and was the rallying point for a group called the Red Shirts that in the mid 1870’s went to Columbia to take the state government back from the carpetbaggers and Federals.

We can finish up with with some of the best hamburgers, fries, onion rings, and hot dogs around. We’ll get them from the now very respectable Edgefield Billard Pallor. The statue of Strom Thurmond faces the Pool Hall. Looking forward to a fun morning. It is not likely that we will be able to get the Wild Turkey Federation to open their exhibits on a Saturday but I haven’t given up on that yet. The Discovery Center is Free and Oakley Park has a $5 admission.
